The 'Gotta Be You' stars say they want to keep "moving with the times" with their musical sound.
One Direction star Harry Styles says the band's new album 'Take Me Home' as a more "live" sound than their 2011 debut.
The 'What Makes You Beautiful' stars are preparing to release their second record later this month and say they enjoyed experimenting with their sound during the recording process.
"We want to gradually get more and more 'live' sounding," Harry reveals in the December issue of Vogue UK magazine. "So this album is a lot less little synth sounds, more guitars and drums.
"It's important to experiment with things," the 'One Thing' singer explained. "We want to move with the times, but keep true to ourselves."
Fellow band member Niall Horan also spoke about their contributions to the record, and confirmed that they both wrote and play instruments on a number of songs from the album.
He added: "We did a lot of writing in the studio. And I play the guitar, so I play on a lot of the tracks on the album."
