The film, due to be released in 2013, is set to be directed by Super Size Me's Morgan Spurlock.
One Direction's forthcoming 3D movie will be "amazing", according to Simon Cowell.
The music mogul, who has helped mastermind the former The X Factor stars' career, said he was excited to have secured director Morgan Spurlock to work on the project.
The currently untitled film is due to be released in August 2013 and will feature footage from their forthcoming world tour, which is due to begin in the UK at the start of next year.
"Well, I mean, for anyone whose fan of the band you're gonna get a chance to really see what it's like preparing for one of these big concert tours, a lot of it is about the fans," Simon Cowell told MTV News.
"Morgan Spurlock's directing. He's cool, I met him. I think it's going to be amazing."
Speaking about Spurlock's involvement, Simon said: "He was just such fan of doing it. What he gets is storytelling and he likes detail and he's fun and the band likes him. I think he's going to make an interesting movie."
One Direction are expected to go to number one in the US with their second album 'Take Me Home' this week – an achievement Simon said was thanks to their fans.
