Singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her North London flat.
The London Ambulance Service was called to her flat just after 4pm but were unable to save her life.
Sky News sources said the singer was "beyond help" when paramedics arrived.
"On arrival, officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene," a police statement said.
Her death is being treated as unexplained and inquiries are continuing into the circumstances, it added.
A section of the street on which she lived had been cordoned off by police as fans gathered.
A spokesman for Amy said:
"Everyone involved with Amy is shocked and devasted. Our thoughts are with her family and friends. The family will issue a statement when ready."
Singer Michelle Gayle told Sky News that Amy's father Mitch was "devastated".
It was recently reported that the 'Back to Black' singer's third studio album was complete but her re-admission to rehab had delayed its release.
Winehouse made her last public appearance on Wednesday joining Goddaughter Dionne Bromfield on stage at the iTunes Festival.
